Mauricio Limón Versus (buscando la sombra del arbol) October 14 - November 12, 2011
Laroche/Joncas is pleased to present 'Versus (buscando la sombra del arbol)' an exhibition of recent works on paper and a video by Mexico city based artist Mauricio Limón. This will be the artist’s second solo exhibition with the gallery.
The exhibition consists of 36 watercolour and ink works on paper, a 7:57 minute video and 2 books of his drawings .
Versus (buscando la sombre del arbol) refers to the way people appear in the diverse classes of the population. From ordinary people and squee-gee kids to business men, the clothes we wear helps us define status and identity. The business suit has come to symbolize not only the business man but also the business of drug and the cartels that are rampant in Mexico. The nakedness of a person is the only way to hide that status.
The figures sometimes morphing into plants and animals make reference to the hallucinogenic effects of the psychotropic drug.
The main focus of Mauricio Limóns past works has explored the world of psychosomatic experiences induced with the use of different psycho tropical substances. Having experienced himself these alternate states the artist is able to present a personal view of these alternative levels of consciousness.
Mauricio Limón’s projects are known to a variety of curators who have invited him to participate in international exhibitions.
The video work that we are showing at the galley is also exhibited to November 12 the exhibition ‘DIsponible: A kind of Mexican Show’ at the SMFA (School of Fine Arts Boston). Selected past exhibitions include Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, Mexico (2003,2006), Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2005), P74 Center and Gallery, Ljubljana-Eslovenia (2007), Musee d'art Contemporain du Val de Marne, Paris (2007), Casa Luis Barragán, Mexico (2007), Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico(2008), Centre Pompidou, Paris (2008), Museo Universitario de Ciencias y Arte (Roma), Mexico (2009) Art Sydney 2009.
