Projex-Mtl galerie is very pleased to present an exhibition of new works on paper by artist Susan G. Scott from the Young Artists series from May 3rd – June 7th 2008. This is Scott’s first solo exhibition with Projex-Mtl Galerie.
“The Young Artists series question the narrative of the artist’s own process, the way in which each painting tells the story of the subject, the story of the object and inevitably, the story of the artist herself, unavoidably drawn, etched and dabbed into the lines and colours that make the image. This new body of work is primarily in diptych format and couples the artist at work in a studio setting with the artwork itself. Their juxtaposition presents many of the questions and issues that lie at the heart of the artist’s vocation. The artist is presented in monochromatic colour, the strictly factual line drawing in black and white in the full and glaring clutter of a studio setting. The distancing of the uncomfortable angles emphasizes the peculiarly unsettling anxiety and tension that are part of an unfinished artwork–the process that impels the artist towards a state of balance or “composition”. The diptych format used by Scott allows her to explore the complex juxtaposition of figuration and abstraction compelling the viewer to question the choices of the artist in the pursuit of meaningful expression as well as their own preferences as consumers of art.”
Susan G. Scott left Montreal in 1966 at the age of 17 to study painting at Pratt Institute in New York City. She attended schools in Boston, Maine, Montreal, and finally the New York Studio. School. She has taught in various schools throughout North America and currently teaches painting at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec. A Reception with the artist will be held Saturday May 3, 15:00 – 18:00.
