Gilles Mihalcean
Né à Montréal, Gilles Mihalcean explore depuis 1969 la valeur poétique des matériaux, bruts ou ready-made, de manière à créer une métaphore, un récit qui naît de l’imagination du regardant et qui s’inscrit dans le temps. Ce sculpteur autodidacte, dont le travail a contribué au renouveau de la sculpture dans les années 1980, a fait notamment l’objet d’une rétrospective au Musée d’art contemporain en 1995.

Démarche artistique
“Depuis plus de quarante ans, mon travail de sculpture est axé autour d’une approche poétique et narrative bâtie, en grande partie, à partir des propriétés expressives des différents matériaux utilisés dans une même sculpture, alliées à des constructions inventives et imaginaires. Élaborées par assemblage, les formes s’associent et se jouent de nos perceptions par des changements d’échelle, de couleur et de texture. L’utilisation de la métaphore, l’ouverture des volumes aux interprétations multiples et la recherche d’effets de surprise font parti des stratégies avec lesquelles j’essaie de construire une émotion bien ancrée à la culture ambiante.”

Biography
Born in Montreal, Gilles Mihalcean has been exploring since 1969 the poetic value of materials, raw or ready-made, in order to create a metaphor, a story that springs from the imagination of the seeker and that is rooted in time. This self-taught sculptor, whose work contributed to the revival of sculpture in the 1980s, was the subject of a retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art in 1995.

Artistic approach
“For more than forty years, my sculpture work has explored a poetic and narrative approach built, in large part, from the expressive properties of the different materials used in the same sculpture, combined with inventive and imaginary constructions. Developed by assembly, the forms combine and play with our perceptions through changes in scale, color and texture. The use of metaphor, the opening of volumes to multiple interpretations and the search for surprise effects are part of the strategies with which I try to build an emotion well anchored in the surrounding culture.”
