ENGLISH

Laroche/Joncas gallery is very pleased to present Inhabited Likeness, an exhibition of new paintings by Vancouver based artist Lesley Anderson.

Perception and deception lie at the heart of Anderson’s practice. Her subtly illusionistic compositions combine her interests in materials, surface, hard-edge, trompe-l’oeil and gestural abstraction.

Teasing the surface of the canvas to create reliefs, recessed spaces, and niches, many of the works present a likeness of recession, while others the enduring presence of surface. The subject of gesture is prominent, as is the idea of deception or betrayal. Compositions present the gesture as the primary subject, but a mediated one. Marks that appear dashed off or as grand acts of mark making, are in fact rendered ones, composed and carefully painted, or built up of constituent parts.

This representation of making is a reflexive act, one intended to reflect on painting’s processes and its so-called appearances. The concept of representation – to look like, to resemble, and also to ‘symbolize’ or ‘be the embodiment of’ – is to stand in for, and take the place of something else. Anderson’s practice attempts to embody the materials and processes of making, by mediating the language of splatters, spills and smudges. Hers is a practice that oscillates between surface, depth, illusion and mark making, one in which the artist has attempted to embody, or inhabit, those spaces in between.

Anderson holds an Master Degree from Concordia University (2015) and a BFA from Emily Carr University (2009). She has exhibited in independent project spaces, artist run centers, institutions and abroad. Recently Anderson’s work was published in Spiffy Moves, a printed collection of art writing and visual art (2015), and exhibited as part of a group show at Le Commissariat, an independently curated space in Paris, France (2014). Other exhibitions include: The Divide at Black and Yellow Gallery (2012) and Heavenly Bodies at the Crying Room in Vancouver BC (2012). She lives and works in Vancouver, BC.
