La galerie Laroche/Joncas est heureuse de présenter l’exposition de l’artiste Canadien Sean Montgomery: ‘Building Bildung’, la première avec la galerie ainsi que sa première exposition solo à Montréal. Avec cette exposition, Montgomery approfondit ses recherches sur la notion de masculinité et plus spécifiquement sa représentation à travers l’iconographie Canadienne. L’artiste examine et questionne les hiérarchies artistiques et comment elles influencent la pratique de la peinture ainsi que l’histoire de l’abstraction.
Le titre de l’exposition ‘Building Buildung’ fait référence au mot allemand ‘Bildung’, qui est difficile à traduire dans une autre langue. Bildung renvoie à des questions d’éducation, d’apprentissage et d’enseignement, de culture, de formation, de création, ainsi qu’au développement spirituel et personnel de l’individu. Utilisant des symboles iconographiques de la masculinité, tels que des logos d’équipes sportives, des marques de bière ou d’autres objets usuels, l’artiste interroge la notion de masculinité ainsi que la façon dont ces symboles peuvent être reliés à l’art et à la pureté moderniste.
Les œuvres de Sean Montgomery ont été présentées l’été dernier dans le cadre de l’exposition ‘Peinture Extrême’. L’artiste participera également à l’exposition de groupe ‘Not Quite / Pas tout à fait’ organisée par le commissaire Lon Dubinsky à la galerie Stewart Hall de Pointe-Claire à Montréal, du 29 Janvier au 13 Mars 2011.
Sean Montgomery est né à Edmonton en Alberta, il vit présentement à Ithaca, dans l’État de New-York. Il est Bachelier de l’Université de l’Alberta et en 2009 il a complété une maîtrise à l’Université Concordia à Montréal. Ses œuvres se retrouvent dans plusieurs collections au Canada ainsi qu’à l’Alberta Foundation for the Arts à Edmonton.

Laroche/Joncas gallery is pleased to present the exhibition “Building Bildung” by Canadian artist Sean Montgomery. Montgomery’s new series of paintings continues his investigations on notions of masculinity specifically its representation through Canadian iconography. The artist also examines artistic hierarchies as these concerns relate to painting itself and the history of abstraction.
The title of the exhibition ‘Building Bildung’ makes reference to the German word “Bildung” which does not easily translate in other languages. It is related to issues of education (both learning and teaching), culture, formation, creation, and the spiritual and personal development of the individual.’ Combining this with iconographic symbols of masculinity such as sports logos, beer labels and other objects, the artist questions notions of masculinity and how these symbols relate to painting and notions of modernist purity.
This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with Laroche/Joncas Gallery, his work was featured in the group exhibition Extreme Painting in the Summer of 2010. The artist will also be in the group exhibition “Not Quite/Pas Tout a Faite” curated by Lon Dubinsky at Stewart Hall Art Gallery, Pointe-Claire, Quebec, January 29 to March 13.
Sean Montgomery is an artist from Edmonton, Alberta, who currently lives and works in Ithaca, New York. He holds a BFA from the University of Alberta and a MFA from Concordia University. His works are found in private collections across Canada and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Edmonton, Alberta.
