Acheter une maison, l’assurer et calicer le feu d’dans est la toute première exposition solo avec la galerie de l’artiste québécois Antoine Larocque.
Le travail de l’artiste se déploie en plusieurs formes avec une diversité de médiums incluant l’écriture, la peinture, la photographie, des articles de journaux et de magazines, de pamphlets récupérés et d’objets hétéroclites qui se retrouvent sous forme de collages dans les oeuvres de l’exposition.
Le titre est inspiré des écrits du poète poète québécois Yves Boisvert (1950-2012) qui en 1997 publie Les Chaouins qui n’est pas un roman mais raconte plutôt une série de petites histoires au sujet de déshérités surgis du fond des rangs de campagne : les Chaouins. « Magouas, bozos et autres sans-dessein peuplent le tiers-monde de l’arrière-pays où la mentalité minoritaire vaut ce que vaut le territoire : du sable, du débris, de la rouille », nous dit Yves Boisvert. Un volume à la fois étonnant et déroutant. (Une copie de La pensée niaiseuse ou les aventures du Compte d’Hydro publié en 2001 du même auteur se retrouve au sol derrière une antenne parabolique où l’artiste a écrit Call Malade.
L’exposition explore plusieurs thèmes et sujets incluant la crise d’Octobre de l’automne 1970, la banalisation de la violence (Se bizouner un gun) la hiérarchie dans nos sociétés (Pas de cévé) de l’aliénation et quelque fois de la rage des exclus, des oubliés ou de ceux qui vivent en marge de la société.
Avec un sens de l’humour débridant et survolté l’artiste réussit à exprimer avec quelques mots choisis ces différents états d’esprits.
Plusieurs des oeuvres de l’exposition font directement référence aux écrits de Yves Boisvert dans lesquels l’artiste retrouve les dynamiques où il a lui même évolué en tant que jeune artiste émergeant vivant dans une région rurale de la province. Il en profite pour explorer ses propres sentiments d’aliénation et d’incompréhension qui sont le lot der la plupart des artistes, des sentiments probablement encore plus extrêmes là où l’art reste un phénomème marginal et mal compris.
Né à Arthabaska, Antoine Larocque est un artiste visuel dont le travail se caractérise par une approche personnelle, brute et expérimentale de l’image. Il privilégie des moyens rudimentaires et des éléments trouvés dans son quotidien, dans le but de transfigurer les codes esthétique de la culture populaire de la région où il a grandi. Ses oeuvres vidéos sont diffusées au Canada et à l’international.

Acheter une maison l’assurer et calicer le feu d’dans is the first solo exhibition with the gallery of the artist Antoine Larocque.
The artist’s work unfolds in several shapes and sizes using an impressive array and diversity of mediums including writing, painting, photography, clips from newspapers and magazines, pamphlets and books as well as founds objects are used to create his works. A used door, a parabolic antenna, a quilt and blanket sheets even found their way into the exhibition.
The title of the exhibition is inspired by the writings of Quebec poet Yves Boisvert (1950-2012) who coined the term Chaoins. In 1997 Boivert publishes Les Chaouins which is not a novel but rather a series of short stories inhabited by the disinherited from the bottom of the countryside : the Chaouins. “Magouas, bozos and others without purpose that populate the third world of the hinterland where the minority mentality is worth what the territory is worth: sand, debris, rust”, says Yves Boisvert. A volume that is both astonishing and disconcerting. A copy of his book La pensée niaiseuse ou les aventures du Compte d’Hydro published in 2001 is also part of the exhibition next to the satellite dish on which the artist wrote Call malade ‘Call in sick’.
The exhibition explores many themes and subjects including the Québec October crisis from the fall of 1970, the trivialization of violence (Se bizouner un gun) the social codes in our societies (Pas de cévé) and the alienation and rage of the excluded and the forgotten or those who live on the margins of society. With a clever and often cynical sense of humour, most often unbridled, the artist manages to express with a few incisive words these states of mind.
Daring to name bluntly realities, situations or injustices found in our society in order to denounce or to simply bring the viewer’s attention to them, always with a tone that is both cynical and ironic and direct.
Several of the works in the exhibition refer directly to the writings of Yves Boisvert where the artist finds the dynamics in which he himself evolved as a young emerging artist living in a rural area of the province. He takes the opportunity to explore his own feelings of alienation and incomprehension which are preoccupations of many artists, feelings which are possibly even more extreme where art remains a misunderstood and marginal.
Born in Arthabaska, Antoine Larocque is a visual artist whose work is characterized by a personal, raw and experimental approach to the image. He favors rudimentary means and elements found in his daily life, with the aim of transfiguring the aesthetic codes of the popular culture of the region where he grew up. His video works have been shown in Canada and internationally.
