Ben Sloat, Stellar Parallax (Cape Breton)

Développant l’idée de la parallaxe stellaire, où le spectateur et le sujet sont en mouvement, les œuvres de cette exposition recueillent diverses images du Cap-Breton (images historiques de navires, du rivage, du phare) et les combinent avec des symboles des Mi ‘kmaq et le motif tartan propre au Cap-Breton.
Une sorte de circulation se crée alors, où le spectateur est conscient de ses propres conditions de vision, condition souvent provoquée par l’impact du paysage du Cap-Breton. En complément, un miroir convexe circulaire est utilisé comme un moyen pour le spectateur de “se voir en train de voir” dans le paysage.
Une œuvre de l’exposition reflète la présence de longue date de l’artiste Robert Frank à Mabou au Cap Breton et partage une image de lui réalisée par l’artiste, ainsi que l’œuvre de Frank réalisée à Mabou.

Expanding on the idea of the Stellar Parallax, where both the viewer and the subject are in motion, works from this exhibition collect various images from Cape Breton (historical images of ships, the shoreline, the lighthouse) and combine them with symbols from the Mi’kmaq people and the tartan design specific to Cape Breton.
A circulation of sorts is then created, where the viewer is aware of their own conditions of seeing, a condition often brought about by the impact of the Cape Breton landscape. In companion, a circular convex mirror is used as a means for the viewer to “see themselves seeing” in the landscape.
One work from this exhibition reflects the longtime presence of Robert Frank in Mabou, and shares an image of him made by the artist, as well as Frank’s work made in Mabou.
