Nous sommes ravis de présenter la première exposition solo de l’artiste photographe belge Bert Danckaert. L’artiste qui vit et travaille à Anvers voyage à travers le monde afin de trouver les images qu’il recherche, que se soit en Chine, en Thaïlande, au Mexique, à Cuba ou au Québec, Danckaert explore l’environnement d’où il choisira ensuite soigneusement son angle avant de capter la scène. Avec cette démarche mesurée et contrôlée, il souhaite faire parler les divers éléments eux-mêmes.

‘Le sujet des photographies de Bert Danckaert ne sont pas à propos des lieux où il capture ses images mais plutôt à propos des possibilités que ces espaces qu’il documente soigneusement révèlent.

L’oeuvre de Danckaert qui est à la fois documentaire, formaliste et minimaliste, donne toute l’importance à la couleur, aux formes ainsi qu’à la cohérence de l’ensemble. Même si ces compositions soignées peuvent évoquer des toiles abstraites ce sont toujours composées d’éléments issus de la réalité.
En excluant toute figure humaine comme le faisait Lynne Cohen, en qui l’artiste reconnait une importante source d’inspiration, Bert Danckaert uniformalise l’espace urbain pour également aborder la réalité de la globalisation de la planète. Jamais recadrées ni retouchées et n’incluant aucun éclairage artificiel, ces compositions semblent présenter le temps suspendu et arrêté. Sa perception de l’espace urbain amène le spectateur à prendre consicence de l’esthétique des choses qui l’entourent et l’invite à reconsidérer son environnement.

En 1999, Danckaert a initié sa série Make Sense ! qui a été le sujet d’un livre en 2006. En 2007, il commence à travailler sur une série intitulée Simple Present qui en 2013 devient également le sujet d’une publication, Simple Present – Beijing. En 2016 Horizon son cinquième livre est publié, la même année que la traduction anglaise de sa nouvelle The Extras où l’action se situe sur un plateau de tournage à Bollywood en Inde où l’auteur explore les moteurs du processus artistique et du médium photographique. C’est aussi une réflection à propos du travail du photographe qui travaille à la limite de la fiction et de la réalité dans un monde globalisé, où il est de plus en plus difficile de prendre une position claire.
L’artiste sera présent pour le vernissage.Ce sera la première exposition solo de l’artiste au Canada.

Né en 1965 à Anvers, Belgique, Bert Danckaert a étudié la photographie à l’Académie Royale des beaux-arts d’Anvers. Depuis le milieu des années 1990 il travaille comme photographe et a présenté ses oeuvres dans plusieurs expositions solo et collectives en Belgique en Europe en Chine et à Cuba.
Bert Danckaert écrit également sur la photographie et pour plusieurs publications, notamment le Art contemporary art magazine. Il a également travaillé comme commissaire indépendant d’exposition de photographie. Il est professeur associé de photographie à l’Académie Royale des beaux-arts de Anvers et membre du POC (Piece of cake) un regroupement international de photographes.

We are thrilled to present the first solo exhibition by the Belgian artist/photographer Bert Danckaert who lives and works in Antwerp. The artist travels extensively throughout the world in search of his subject. Whether his travels take him to China,Thailand, Mexico, Cuba or here in Québec the artist carefully selects his composition before deciding on taking his photograph. With this measured approach Danckaert allows the elements chosen in the frame to speak for themselves.

Bert Danckaert’s meticulous compositions that are part documentary, formalist and minimalist, lets color, form and the coherence of the composition become the main feature of the impeccably crafted result. Even though his careful compositions might evoke abstract painting compositions, the subject matter is always the reality of the built environment.
Excluding any human figure, a position that Lynne Cohen also favoured, an artist in which Danckaert recognizes as an important influence, he uniformises the urban space. Never reframed or retouched nor including artificial lighting, his compositions seem to present a time suspended, stopped. His interpretation of the urban space leads the spectator to reconsider the aesthetics of their surroundings and invites them to reconsider their environment.

In 1999, Danckaert started the series of photographs Make Sense! which was published as a book in 2006. In 2007 he started working on a series titled Simple Present of which the book Simple Present – Beijing appeared in 2008, Cape Town Notes in 2009 and finally the complete series Simple Present in 2013. In 2016 his 5th book Horizon appeared together with the English translation of his novel De Extra’s as The Extras a novel set in Bollywood, India about how doubt and incapacity drive the artistic process. The novel is also a reflection on the oeuvre of photographers working along the boundaries of fiction and reality in a globalized world, where it is increasingly difficult to take a clear position (or photographic point of view).
This will be the artists first exhibition in Canada.

Born in 1965 in Antwerp Belgium, Bert Danckaert studied photography at the Academy of Fine Arts and the National Higher Institute of Fine Arts (NHISK) in Antwerp. Since the mid nineties, he has been working as a photographer and has showed his work in several solo and group exhibitions in Belgium, in Europe, China and in Cuba. Besides his artistic activities, Danckaert also writes about photography for several newspapers and magazines, mainly ART magazine and has worked as a freelance curator. He is associate professor of photography at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp. Bert Danckaert is a member of POC (Piece of Cake), an international network of photographers.
