La Galerie LarocheJoncas est ravie de présenter Lune de craie, la première exposition individuelle avec la galerie de la photographe et artiste montréalaise Laurence Hervieux-Gosselin.

Dans son œuvre, Laurence Hervieux-Gosselin explore la complexité de la représentation et les mystères qui persistent au-delà de la réalité apparente. À travers la photographie, elle cherche à interroger nos instincts narratifs, invitant ainsi à de nouvelles interprétations du réel.

Sous la direction curatoriale de Denis Rioux, Lune de craie rassemble une sélection de photographies récentes, présentées dans une installation qui navigue entre le dramatique et le ludique. Les sujets abordés dans l’exposition sont variés : un culturiste posant devant un miroir, une enseigne St-Hubert ensevelie sous la neige, un soleil de juillet perçant le smog, une femme assise dans une clairière devant un ring light, un jeu d’arcade de Dance Dance Revolution, un papillon devant la silhouette des gratte-ciels de New York… La séquence des photographies dans l’espace est rythmée par des changements d’échelle soudains, des glissements perceptifs et des transitions entre la couleur et le noir et blanc, révélant progressivement des connexions inattendues entre les images.

Cette exposition marque l’inauguration de notre nouvel espace, “L’appartement,” situé au 1815 rue St-André à Montréal. Elle se déroule du 28 septembre au 21 octobre 2023 et est présentée dans le cadre du programme satellite de MOMENTA Biennale de l’image (7 septembre au 22 octobre 2023).

Laurence Hervieux-Gosselin (1991) est une artiste et photographe basée à Montréal. Elle a étudié en scénarisation et en communication à l’Université du Québec à Montréal. Elle détient un baccalauréat en photographie de l’Université Concordia ainsi qu’une maîtrise en Art Photography du College of Visual and Performing Arts de Syracuse University, NY. Elle est lauréate du Prix Lynne-Cohen en 2021. Elle était aussi finaliste du Scotiabank New Generation Photography Award en 2018 et du Ideastap Photographic Award à Londres avec Magnum Photos en 2014 (Magnum Photos a été fondé en 1947 deux ans après la deuxième guerre mondiale par 4 photographes Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger et David “Chim” Seymour). Récemment, son travail a été exposé à la Foire PLURAL dans le Vieux-Port de Montréal avec la Galerie LarocheJoncas. Elle participe aux Rencontres internationales de la photographie en Gaspésie en 2022 et présente ses œuvres à la galerie La Castiglione à Montréal à Uqbar, Berlin, ainsi qu’au China Millenium Monument à Beijing, en 2018.

Galerie Laroche/Joncas is delighted to present Lune de craie (Chalk Moon) the first solo exhibition with the gallery of Montréal based photographer Laurence Hervieux-Gosselin.

Through her work, Laurence Hervieux-Gosselin delves into the intricacies of representation and the mystery that persists beyond the surface of apparent reality. Her photographic approach is a quest to challenge our narrative instincts, encouraging novel interpretations of the world around us.

Under the curatorial direction of Denis Rioux, Lune de craie features recent works presented in an installation that navigates the spectrum between the dramatic and the playful. Within the exhibition, viewers encounter a diverse array of subjects: a bodybuilder striking a pose in front of a mirror, a St-Hubert sign burried under a blanket of snow, a July sun piercing through the smog, a Dance Dance Revolution arcade game, a butterfly juxtaposed against the New York City skyline. The sequence unfolds at an enigmatic pace, with perceptual shifts, sudden scale transformations, and the transition from color to black and white gradually unvealing unexpected connections between the images.

This exhibition marks the inaugural presentation in LarocheJoncas’ new gallery space, “L’appartement,” located at 1815 rue St-André in Montreal. It will be open for public viewing from September 28 to October 21, 2023. Notably, this exhibition is part of the satellite program associated with the MOMENTA Biennale de l’image, taking place from September 7 to October 22, 2023.

Laurence Hervieux-Gosselin (b. 1991) is an artist and photographer based in Montreal. She studied scriptwriting and communication at Université du Québec à Montréal, and has a BFA in Photography from Concordia University. She completed an MFA in Art Photography from the College of Visual and Performing Arts of Syracuse University. In 2021, she won the Lynne-Cohen Prize. She was also a finalist for the Scotiabank New Generation Photography Award in 2018, and a finalist for the Ideastap Photographic Award with Magnum Photos in 2014 (Magnum Photos was formed in 1947 two years after the second World War by four photographers: Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David “Chim” Seymour).  Recently, her work has been shown at Plural Contemporary Art Fair, in Montréal, with Galerie LarocheJoncas, at the Rencontres internationales de la photographie en Gaspésie (2022), at La Castiglione gallery (Montreal, 2020), at Uqbar (Berlin, 2018) and at the China Millenium Monument (Beijing, 2018).
