La Galerie Laroche/Joncas est heureuse de présenter Painting Place, une exposition de Sean Montgomery avec des nouvelles oeuvres sur papier.
Pour sa quatrième exposition solo avec la Galerie, Sean Montgomery a créé une série de nouvelles œuvres suite à ses recherches sur la vie et l’œuvre de l’artiste canadien David Milne (1882-1953). Painting Place inclut une sélection de gouaches et d’acryliques sur papier, en majorité des paysages à la limite de la représentation et de l’abstraction.
C’est en réfléchissant à la représentation du paysage que Montgomery, qui vit et peint dans l’état de New-York à Ithaca depuis 2010, que lui vient à l’esprit les similarités qu’il partage avec la vie et le travail de l’artiste David Milne. Les paysages de collines à perte de vues étant en contraste avec les autres endroits où Montgomery avait vécu et peint; les plaines minimalistes des Prairies Canadiennes ou bien l’urbanisme composé de la ville de Montréal.
Les confluences des pratiques des deux artistes allaient même plus loin, Milne ayant présenté une exposition solo à Ithaca presque cents ans plus tôt, et ayant créé des tableaux d’un parc du quartier Pointe-St-Charles où Montgomery avait habité lorsqu’il étudiait à Montréal.
Le titre de l’exposition : “Painting Place” prend donc une double signification, il peut faire référence l’acte de peindre un endroit spécifique, un paysage particulier, mais il fait aussi référence au paysage mental auquel l’artiste doit se trouver, de se cultiver afin de pouvoir créer.
Sean Montgomery est né à Edmonton en Alberta. Il a reçu un Baccalauréat (BFA) de l’Université de l’Alberta et une maîtrise (MFA) de l’Université Concordia en 2004. Il a exposé ses œuvres au Museum Sinclair-Haus en Allemagne, À l’Université de Göteborg en Suède ainsi que plusieurs centres d’artistes au Canada et aux États-Unis. Ses œuvres se retrouvent dans plusieurs corporations corporatives dont celle de la Banque TD à Toronto, Ontario, de la Alberta Fondation for the Arts à Edmonton en Alberta, de Cenovus Energy à Calgary, Alberta et de la compagnie Ron Herman au Japon. Ses oeuvres font également partie de plusieurs collections privées au Québec, au Canada, aux USA ainsi qu’en Europe.

Gallery Laroche/Joncas is very pleased to present Painting Place an exhibition of new works by Sean Montgomery.
For his fourth solo exhibition with the gallery, Montgomery has created a series of works on paper in response to his study of the life and paintings of famed Canadian artist David Milne (1882-1953).
“Painting Place”, includes a selection of recent acrylics on paper, as well as smaller gouache pieces that are all nominally landscapes, although they range from the more identifiable to the abstract.
Montgomery has been living and painting in Ithaca, New York since 2010. While reflecting on the local landscape, he came to notice the similarities of the setting of Milne’s works from a century earlier. The verdant landscape of rolling hills came as a large contrast to locations Montgomery had previously lived and painted: either the planar minimalism of the Canadian prairie, or the cobbled urbanism of Montreal. David Milne’s often modernist and experimental approach was a contrast to the more impressionistic one of the Group of Seven
The confluences of the two artists practices ran deeper, Milne having presented a solo exhibition in Ithaca almost one hundred years ago as well as having made paintings of the neighborhood park in Pointe Saint-Charles that Montgomery lived next to in Montreal.
The title, “Painting Place” has two meanings. Either to paint a literal place, a specific landscape, but also the psychic landscape the artist must form in order to create.
Sean Montgomery is an artist from Edmonton, Alberta. He received a BFA from the University of Alberta and a MFA from Concordia University in 2004.
Montgomery has exhibited his paintings at Museum Sinclair-Haus in Germany, Göteborg University, Göteborg, Sweden, at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, and in several artist run centers in Canada and the USA. His works are in several corporate collections such as TD Bank, Toronto, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts in Edmonton Alberta, Cenovus Energy in Calgary, Alberta, Ron Herman, Japan and several private collections in Canada , U.S.A. and Europe.
