Nous sommes très heureux de présenter The Way of The Leaf de Sean Montgomery.

The Way of the Leaf marque la cinquième exposition solo de l’artiste avec la galerie et sa première depuis son retour à Montréal où il vit et travaille maintenant. The Way of The Leaf tire son titre de la philosophie de vie d’un goupe de pacifistes nomadiques qui a inspiré une populaire série télévisée créée par Robert Jordan intitulée The Wheel of Time. La philosophie et le système politique du groupe a piqué la curiosité de Montgomery, spécialement durant la période où il a vécu à l’extérieur du pays. The Way of The Leaf présente une sélection des oeuvres de petites dimensions caractéristiques de l’artiste qu’il a produites en 2018 alors que l’artiste vivait en Pensylvannie rurale.

Telle la feuille d’un arbre portée par le vent, quelle que soit sa direction, l’artiste nomade aussi se promène à travers le temps et l’espace, s’inspirant des lieux et influences diverses qui deviennent des lieux fertiles d’inspiration. Montgomery invite l’audience à se déplacer telle la feuille d’un arbre, pour découvrir les oeuvres de l’exposition de façon fluide et personnelle, permettant au spectateur de construire des connections et narrations des toiles à sa guise.

Principalement, une exposition de paysages, les toiles présentées s’inspirent d’un large spectre de matériel source. Le sujet de l’exposition est un mélange de paysages à la fois métaphorique et littéral, d’abstractions, d’art vernaculaire, d’histoire des relations de travail radicalistes, du Bauhaus, du célèbre récit Walden, une vie dans les bois de David Henri Thoreau mais aussi du climat politique actuel.
Né à Edmonton, l’artiste détient une maîtrise en arts visuels de l’université Concordia de Montréal, (2010). Sean Montgomery a exposé dans une diversité de contextes incluant Cornell University, Ithaca, New York en 2013 et 2014 et le Sinclair-Haus Museum en Allemagne en 2014. Son travail a été présenté dans des centres d’artistes en Suède aux États-Unis et au Canada e plusieurs foires dont NEXT Chicago, Art Toronto et la foire PAPIER à Montréal à plusieurs reprises.
Ses oeuvres se retrouvent dans plusieurs collections privées et corporatives au Québec, au Canada et aux U.S.A., mais aussi en Allemagne et au Japon, dont Cenovus, Calgary, Banque TD, Toronto, La Collection Senvest à Montréal ainsi que la compagnie Ron Herman basée à Tokyo. Il vit et travaille maintenant à Montréal.

The Way of The Leaf

We are thrilled to present The Way of The Leaf, the fifth solo exhibition by Sean Montgomery with the gallery. The artist has recently returned to Montreal after living for more than 8 years in the United States.

The Way of the Leaf takes its title from the life philosophy of a group of nomadic pacifists from The Wheel of Time, a popular fantasy series by Robert Jordan. This social and political system has piqued Montgomery’s curiosity, especially during his decade living abroad. The Way of the Leaf presents a selection of Montgomery’s characteristic small-scale acrylic paintings produced in 2018 while the artist was living in rural Pennsylvania.

Just as the leaf floats on the winds that carry it, wherever that may lead, the artist-nomad drifts across time and space, pulling disparate places and influences into a fertile ground of inspiration. Montgomery invites audiences of his work to move like the leaf, making sense of the work in a fluid and personal way. He invites a conception of interpretive flexibility into the work, allowing viewers to build connections and narratives of the paintings as they wish.

Nominally an exhibition of landscapes, the paintings on view draw from a wide range of source material. The subject matter is a stew of both literal and metaphorical landscapes, abstraction, vernacular art, radical labour history, the Bauhaus, autobiography, Thoreau’s “Walden,” and the current political climat.

Sean Montgomery was born in Edmonton, Alberta. In 2010, he completed an MFA in Visual Arts at Concordia University in Montreal. Sean Montgomery’s work has been exhibited at a range of venues including universities, commercial galleries, artist run centers and art fairs in Canada, Europe, and the USA, most notably in two exhibitions at Cornell University in Ithaca, New-York in 2011 and 2013 and in 2014 at the Museum Sinclair-Haus in Germany. His work can be found in many private and corporate collections in Québec, Ontario, the U.S.A. and in Germany amongst them Cenovus in Calgary, TD Bank in Toronto, Senvest Collection in Montreal and Ron Herman in Tokyo.
