Sean Montgomery : Wilder Walden

La Galerie Laroche/Joncas est heureuse de présenter Wilder Walden de Sean Montgomery la troisième exposition solo de l’artiste avec la Galerie. Inspirée du livre de fiction Walden ou la vie dans les bois publié en 1854 et écrit par l’écrivain transcendentaliste David Henry Thoreau (1817-1862). En s’immersant dans la nature, Thoreau espérait arriver à une compréhension plus objective de la société.
Montgomery s’imagine lui aussi dans un chalet tout comme celui qu’a construit et habité Thoreau à Walden au Massachusetts. C’est ce même voyage spirituel tenté ici avec le médium de la peinture que Montgomery propose cette fois-ci, mais avec la perspective et le style propre à l’artiste, soit avec son approche très directe, très colorée, presque psychédélique.
Dans notre espace de bureau, Sean Montgomery propose Freak Funk Formalism avec des oeuvres de Sonia Haberstich, Patrick Lundeen et Peter Schuyff.
Sean Montgomery est natif de l’Alberta, il vit et travaille à Ithaca, NY. En 2013 il a exposé ses oeuvres en solo à l’université Cornell à Ithaca dans ’ WInter Count’ à la Mann Library Gallery, ’What I like about you’ Parallel Art Space, Brooklyn NY, ainsi que ‘School of Lubividska’, MFA Gallery, à l’ Université Concordia à Montréal.

Galerie Laroche/Joncas is pleased to present Wilder Walden by Sean Montgomery, the third solo exhibition by the artist with the gallery. This series of new paintings is inspired by the 1854 work of fiction Walden: A life in the woods created by American transcendentalist writer David Henry Thoreau (1817-1862).
A reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, the work is part personal declaration of independance, social experiment, voyage of spiritual discovery , satire and a manual for self-reliance. Montgomery imagines himself in the wood shack that Thoreau built for himself , but it is through painting that Montgomery depicts the journey with his characteristic direct, colorful and psychedelic perspective.
Accompanying the exhibition, Freak Funk Formalism selected works by Sonia Haberstich, Patrick Lundeen and Peter Schuyff chosen by Sean Montgomery on view in the gallery’s office space.
In 2013 Sean Montgomery presented ‘Winter Count’ at Cornell University, ‘What I like about you’ Parallel Art Space, Brooklyn, NY, and ‘School of Lubividska’, MFA Gallery at Concordia University, Montréal.
Sean Montgomery was born in Alberta, Canada, he presently lives and works in Ithaca, NY.
