Steve Giasson – Andy Warhol

Dans le cadre de cette exposition de peintures, de sculptures et de dessins réalisés méticuleusement à la main, je poursuis mes recherches sur l’histoire de l’appropriation en art, en me concentrant, comme vous l’aurez deviné, sur la figure tutélaire d’Andy Warhol.
Après la mort de l’artiste, le romancier William S. Burroughs constatait que « l’on ne soulignera jamais assez l’influence d’Andy Warhol sur le monde de l’art. Il a fait voler en éclat toute la hiérarchie des images “artistiques”, il a effacé les lignes de démarcation arbitraires qui délimitaient étroitement “l’art”.
Une soupe en conserve, observée d’un œil lucide, peut devenir aussi miraculeuse qu’une comète. » De fait, plusieurs artistes tels que Elaine Sturtevant, Louise Lawler, Richard Pettibone, Louis Waldon ou Mike Bidlo ont pris la liberté, dès les années 1960, de répliquer des œuvres du Pape du Pop Art. Ce tout nouveau corpus prend frontalement pour objet ce jeu d’influence.

BIOGRAPHIE
Steve Giasson (°1979, Québec) est un artiste conceptuel et docteur en Études et pratiques des arts de l’Université du Québec à Montréal.
Sa pratique engagée et pince-sans-rire s’appuie sur des œuvres préexistantes ou des fragments historiques ou quotidiens, qu’il s’approprie de différentes façons, afin de mettre à mal les notions romantiques d’authenticité et d’originalité et de démystifier le processus créateur et la figure de l’artiste.
Ses œuvres se caractérisent, de plus, par une grande économie de moyens et par leur recours à différents médiums (peinture, dessin, sculpture, art performance, photographie, écriture conceptuelle…)
Son travail a été présenté dans quatorze pays d’Amérique du Nord, d’Europe et d’Asie, dans le cadre d’une douzaine d’expositions personnelles et de nombreuses expositions collectives, dont la Liverpool Biennial 2012, le Text Festival 2011 et 2014 (Manchester), ED RUSCHA BOOKS & Co. au Museum Brandhorst (2013, Munich) et à la Gagosian Gallery (2013, New York City, 2015, Paris et 2016, Beverly Hills) et la Morni Hills Performance Art Biennale II (2018, Morni Hills et Chandigarh, Inde).
L’artiste vit et travaille à Montréal.

In this exhibition of meticulously hand-crafted paintings, sculptures and drawings, I continue my research into the history of appropriation in art, focusing, as you may have guessed, on the tutelary figure by Andy Warhol.
After the artist’s death, the novelist William S. Burroughs noted “we cannot overemphasize Andy Warhol’s influence on the art world.
He shattered the whole hierarchy of “artistic” images, he erased the arbitrary lines of demarcation that narrowly delimited “art”.
A canned soup, observed with a lucid eye, can become as miraculous as a comet. In fact, several artists such as Sturtevant, Louise Lawler, Richard Pettibone, Louis Waldon and Mike Bidlo took the liberty, as early as in the 1960s, of replicating works by the Pope of Pop Art. This new corpus explores specifically this dynamic as its object.

BIOGRAPHY
Steve Giasson (° 1979, Quebec) is a conceptual artist and a Ph. D. in Arts Studies and Practices (Université du Québec à Montréal).
His committed and tongue-in-cheek practice is based on pre-existing artworks or historical or daily fragments, which he appropriates in different ways, in order to undermine romantic notions of authenticity and originality and demystify the creative process and the figure of the artist.
His works are characterized, moreover, by a great economy of means and by their use of different mediums (painting, drawing, sculpture, performance art, photography, conceptual writing…)
His work has been presented in fourteen countries in North America, Europe and Asia, in a dozen solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions, including the Liverpool Biennial 2012, the Text Festival 2011 and 2014 (Manchester), ED RUSCHA BOOKS & Co. at Museum Brandhorst (2013, Munich) and at the Gagosian Gallery (2013, New York City, 2015, Paris and 2016, Beverly Hills) and the Morni Hills Performance Art Biennale II (2018, Morni Hills and Chandigarh, India).
The artist lives and works in Montreal.
