Pour notre exposition d’été intitulée Out of Town, nous avons sélectionnés un groupe de tableaux d’artistes qui vivent tous à l’extérieur de Montréal. Lesley Anderson (Vancouver), Benjamin King (Brooklyn, NY), Sean Montgomery (Ithaca, NY) et François Simard (Ville de Québec) . Chaque artiste privilégie une approche distincte en utilisant la couleur et la matière d’une manière qui leur est propre et c’est justement la réunion des ces différentes approches de ces différents styles dans un même espace qui donne à cet accrochage une autre lecture des oeuvres individuelles.
Deux des artistes présentent une interprétation de la réalité, Untitled 2011 de Benjamin King est un paysage mais qui oscille entre l’abstraction et la figuration, caractéristique de l’artiste tandis que Spring thaw (Dégel du printemps) 2013 de Sean Montgomery représente un étang glacé. Cette œuvre fait partie d’un corpus plus large inspiré par le célèbre livre Walden: A life in the woods écrit par le transcendentaliste américain David Henri Thoreau publié en 1854. Une série de 14 petits tartans de 12×12” réalisés également par Sean Montgomery sont également exposés. Présentés pour la première fois en galerie, cette série explore des notions d’identité une constante dans le travail de Montgomery. Le tableau Sans titre 2015 de Lesley Anderson et l’impressionnant triptyque Spectrum de François Simard (84”x240”) 2011-12 complètent l’accrochage. Ces deux œuvres, résolument abstraites partagent une utilisation de couleurs franches, Simard utilise ce qu’il désigne comme le ‘soft edge’ pour produire une œuvre où le peintre interroge l’espace vibratoire et cinétique tout en remettant en question l’espace-tension engendré sur la toile, Lesley Anderson privilégie une approche plutôt ‘hard edge’ où la forme semble structurer la couleur. For our summer exhibition Out of Town, we have selected a group of paintings by artists that live elsewhere than Montreal. Lesley Anderson (Vancouver), Benjamin King (Brooklyn NY) Sean Montgomery (Ithaca NY) and François Simard (Québec city) whose paintings all realized with contrasting and diverse approaches: all use colors and movement in diverse ways. Two artists present an interpretation of reality, King’s Untitled 2011 a landscape painting which oscillates between figuration and abstraction and Montgomery’s Spring Thaw, which is part of a larger body of work inspired by Henry David Thoreau’s Life in the Woods. Montgomery also has a series of 14 small Tartans paintings 12”x12”also on view. Presented for the first time in the gallery, the tartan series explores notions of identity. Lesley Anderson’s Untitled 2015 and François Simard’s very large triptych (84” x 240”) titled Spectrum from 2011-12, completes the exhibition. François Simard presented his first solo-exhibition with the gallery in June 2015.
Both artists explore color and it’s expressive potential. The approach Simard used to create his work which he qualifies as ‘soft edge’ using only color without any reference to figuration.The painter is interested in the vibration and kinetic space created with color and at the same time questioning these tensions, while Lesley Anderson’s favors a hard edge technique where complex composition uses geometric forms to structure the color. This spontaneous grouping allows the spectator to be surrounded with works that co-exist together for a few weeks, and to construct their own narratives that these mostly abstract works inspire.
